Elderberry Syrup: A recipe

I have always made my own elderberry syrup. I couldn’t bring myself to pay $15-20 a bottle for it, especially when its got preservatives and questionable sweeteners. Not only that, but I can put extra ingredients in that are immune boosting and antimicrobial. Win Win if you ask me. Aaaaand, its so easy! As soon as anyone in the family gets the first cold symptom, I put this on the stove. For our family we’ve noticed great reduction in the severity and duration of colds (we aren’t medicating with OTC pharmaceuticals which can delay healing). I know some people take a tsp. a day during cold season, I’m just not that with it, so we take it at the first sign of getting sick. (take anywhere from 1-4 tsp. a day, I usually take 2) Alison’s...

Top Five Cold remedies

I’ve had several people ask me what my remedies are for cold and flu season, so I thought I would share them here! Here are the top five: 5. Homeopathic aconitum napellus. I love homeopathics for many reasons, and this one is no exception. Taken at the first cold symptoms it will help shorten the duration and lessen severity. 4. Herbal Salve We put this on our feet (with socks) and chest at night and it works miracles for clearing up chest congestion and sleeping well while sick. I don’t like vicks or other commercially prepared products because they have lots of icky carcinogenic ingredients in their products. This or similar products are made with olive oil, beeswax and essential oils, thats all! You can purchase this brand at Mountain Rose...

Healthy Meat

Healthy Meat Again, another great article that I couldn’t have said better myself. I eat meat, but we buy our meat from local grass fed farmers that don’t use antibiotics or hormones. Their animals are on pasture eating their normal diet. They live happy, great lives. Lucy and I visited Hazel Valley Farm this summer and got to see the pigs out in the woods, foraging. Please check out the article, it is of great value…..

Flu thoughts

This article¬†has prompted a lot of thinking for me today. Many close friends and relatives are ‘forced’ to get flu shots as a condition of employment or wear a mask during flu season. While I won’t go into all my thoughts about vaccinations, I urge you to read the post. It is said better and researched more thoughtfully than I have time for. Whats most impressive to me is the information divulged from the Cochrane Collaboration, which is an independent research organization that does NOT receive any funding from drug companies or the government. They are VERY well respected in the medical community. Interestingly, they found doing a review on flu studies not the 60% effectiveness rate that the vaccine manufacturers claim. They also found that...

Book Review: Addiction: the Hidden Epidemic by Pam Killeen

I am almost finished reading this book and it is nothing short of fascinating. Why isn’t this stuff taught in medical schools, nursing schools, etc.? Well, there are a lot of politics involved unfortunately. It is astounding to me that there are people all over the country treating so many diseases with natural substances; things without side effects. I learned in this book that PRESCRIPTION DRUGS are the fourth leading cause of death in this country. That is completely unacceptable. Well over 50% of our population are on at least one prescription drug. Anytime more than one drug is in your system, those effects on your body have never been studied. Ever. Ok, so on to the book. The premise is that addictions and mental disorders are not a moral defect. They...

The Dark Ages

I seriously think sometimes our medical profession is living in the dark ages…..look around! Outside of your medical journals that are sponsored by the drug companies…..take for example this article. We have been using the same calculation for due dates since the 1800′s…..and its been wrong the whole time! The earth is not flat people…..The implications of induction go far beyond prematurity. The risks of induction go far beyond labor. OB’s have no vested intrest in long term outcomes, or breastfeeding rates. They just don’t want to get sued. A full 80% of first time mom’s will go past their due dates. How many of them are pressured into an induction (and easily for most of them that are ‘done’ being...

New Blog

I’m finally back to blogging. I decided to start from scratch with a new site because I was keeping a personal and health blog. I am so committed to health information that it is a big part of my family’s life, so I am going to keep my life all in one boat and share with you personal and important health information altogether. My impetus back into blogging is just the sorry state of the world around me, and all the great information I read on a daily basis that we have PLENTY of power over our health, physiology, children’s and future children’s health, and the vast amount of misinformation out there. It makes me so sad to see people so cavalier about what they put in and on their bodies. People don’t seem to be motivated to change...
